At IMS2024, MilliBox and Eravant Join Forces and Launch Innovative CATR OTA Systems

Eravant Open Bed Compact Range
MilliBox MBX32CTR system

SAN JOSE, CA JUNE 7, 2024 — Eravant the leader in mmWave and sub-THz components, and MilliBox the leader in compact benchtop mmWave anechoic chambers have partnered to launch two new Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) products.

CATR is a type of over-the-air (OTA) antenna test system which uses a parabolic reflector to eliminate the far field measurement distance requirement. When frequency increases, the far-field distance also increases and direct far-field measurements may become impractical for large antenna array applications. In this situation, the use of a parabolic reflector and a precisely placed probe render the test system compact and practical as a benchtop setup.

Eravant launches its new product line STY-CATR-0150-OB-S1, Open Bed Compact Range. This product is a benchtop 3D antenna testing setup with configuration capable of testing from 24GHz to 170GHz with a 150mm quiet zone. This model integrates MilliBox GIM04-300E 3D positioner and its complete data acquisition software. This product line is marketed by Eravant.

MilliBox unveils its new MBX32CTR, a complete solution for mmWave and sub-THz OTA measurement with a quiet zone of 150mm. This package includes an MBX32 chamber, GIM04H-300E 2-axis positioner, laser alignment system, 300mm parabolic reflector, and its focus probe antenna.

MilliBox contributes the chamber and the 3D antenna positioner, while Eravant developed the 300mm reflector and probes for the frequency band required. Eravant also contributes frequency extenders for spectrum usage above 50GHz. This full package is introduced on the market as a complete solution by MilliBox.

“While working together for years, we soon realized that by combining our strengths we could offer unique solutions to the OTA testing market,” says Wendy Shu CEO of Eravant. “MilliBox has chambers, 3D positioners and software, while Eravant has frequency extenders and precision CNC fabrication expertise, it made so much sense to combine those for the market benefit.”

During the IMS2024 exhibition, MilliBox is showing the MBX32CTR-06 in their Booth 705 for the first time. This demonstration operates in D-Band 110GHz to 170GHz and performs a live display of 3D antenna radiation pattern captured in real time. Eravant demonstrates its new Open Bed Compact Range product Booth 1939 with live data capture at 140GHz.

MilliBox Shows mmWave Radar Sensor Testing Solution at IMS2024 in Washington DC

A MBX33R mmWave radar test setup from MilliBox

SAN JOSE, CA JUNE 6, 2024 — MilliBox the leader in compact benchtop mmWave anechoic chambers and antenna positioners propose a compact setup ideally designed for advanced mmWave and sub-THz radar sensor characterization and performance measurements.

A significant portion of MilliBox systems usage revolves around the need for efficient and practical radar testing. One of the typical approaches is to benchmark the object detection and tracking of a radar design against fixed and moving targets. Often, radar targets are trihedral corner reflectors arranged in geometric positions that the radar sensor and its signal processing algorithm can be trained against for accuracy. One purpose of a setup like the one proposed by MilliBox is to verify the radar system angular capability, for example quantifying the angle-of-arrival accuracy and detecting blind spots.

MilliBox solution includes a large cavity compact chamber like MBX32, which gives ample room for radar measurement yet fits on a standard lab bench; GIM04-300X, a 3-axis device under test positioner; and LIN04, a programmable linear actuator holding a corner reflector.

In this demonstration, the 60GHz radar sensor is following a 3D path while a fixed target and an oscillating target are tracked in real time by the sensor. The software displays how well the radar performs at detecting and locating the targets while in motion.

“As the applications for mmWave Radar have been rapidly expanding in recent years, radar characterization and performance testing demand practical and affordable solutions that MilliBox can support,” says Dr Chinh H Doan, founder and CEO of MilliBox.

At IMS2024, MilliBox unveils its first Compact Antenna Test Range

MilliBox MBX32CTR-06 system

SAN JOSE, CA JUNE 6, 2024 — MilliBox the leader in compact benchtop mmWave anechoic chambers and antenna positioners unveils a full Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) capable of 3D radiation pattern in sub-THz spectrum.

CATR is a type of over-the-air (OTA) antenna test system which uses a parabolic reflector to eliminate the far field measurement distance requirement. When frequency increases, the far-field distance also increases and direct far-field measurements, as used in other MilliBox, may become impractical for large antenna array applications. In this situation, the use of a parabolic reflector and a precisely placed probe render the test system compact and practical as a benchtop setup.

MBX32CTR is a complete solution for mmWave and sub-THz OTA measurement with a quiet zone of 150mm. This package includes an MBX32 chamber, GIM04H-300E 2-axis positioner, laser alignment system, 300mm parabolic reflector, and its focus probe antenna.

This product comes from the cooperation between MilliBox and Eravant. MilliBox contributes the chamber and the 3D antenna positioner, while Eravant developed the 300mm reflector and probes for the frequency band required. Eravant also contributes frequency extenders for spectrum usage above 50GHz. Maury Microwave provides the StabilityPlus Low Profile cable assemblies needed to carry the signals out of the 3D positioner. This full package is introduced on the market as a complete solution by MilliBox.

“Through internal innovation or with strategic partnerships, MilliBox continues to pave the way for accessible test systems that makes mmWave and sub-THz possible for all,” says Chinh Doan, CEO of MilliBox.

During the IMS2024 exhibition, MillBox is showing the MBX32CTR-06 in their booth 705 for the first time. This demonstration operates in D-Band 110GHz to 170GHz and performs a live display of 3D antenna radiation pattern captured in real time.

MilliBox expands presence at IMS 2024 in Washington DC

SAN JOSE, CA JUNE 6, 2024 — MilliBox the leader in compact benchtop mmWave anechoic chambers and antenna positioners announces several demonstrations displayed during the 2024 edition of the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium in Washington DC from June 18 to June 20, 2024. Four demonstrations are shown at MilliBox booth 705 and three others will be shown by partners.

Booth 705: MilliBox

MilliBox unveils its new Compact Antenna Test Range system MBX32CTR. It
consists of an MBX32 chamber and a GIM04-300E positioner, and with the addition of a parabolic reflector and probe, it eliminates the far field distance constraints. This demonstration was brought together through cooperation with Eravant who developed the reflector and the probe as well as the frequency extenders for this system. The live demonstration shows a full 3D radiation pattern from 110GHz to 170GHz being captured and displayed in real-time.

MilliBox also demonstrates its innovative approach to mmWave radar sensor testing
with the combination of MBX32R chamber, GIM04-300X 3-axis antenna positioner and LIN04 linear actuated radar target controller. This brings news possibilities in radar characterization and tuning in mmWave and sub-THz domain.

MilliBox showcases MBX03 chamber with GIM05-340, a Spherical Roll 3-axis
positioner, capable of native 3D radiation pattern with very wide unobstructed view angle.

MilliBox shows the benefit of using the StabilityPlus line of RF cable assemblies from
Maury Microwave for routing mmWave signals to a device under test mounted on MilliBox GIM04-230X 3-axis antenna positioner. Effectively routing RF signals in such a multi-axis positioner can be a challenge, but Maury’s flexible coax are amplitude and phase stable which make them ideal for such applications. This demonstrates the wide range of GIM04 motions and the suitability of Maury Microwave cables for 3D OTA measurements.

Booth 1939: Eravant

Eravant shows its integration of MilliBox GIM04-300E for its new Open Bed Compact Range with 150mm of quiet zone. The use of a 3D positioner for this application allows for OTA measurement of a high precision 3D radiation pattern. Because GIM04-300E can mount sub-THz frequency extenders, this solution is suitable for measurements from 24GHz to 170GHz.

Booth 1111: Copper Mountain Technologies

Copper Mountain Technologies shows its new OTA-2H completely integrated OTA test system developed in cooperation with Eravant and MilliBox. MilliBox contributes a full chamber MBX32 and a positioner GIM04-300E, Eravant contributes the frequency extenders from the STO series up to 220GHz, and Copper Mountain Technologies supplies the USB VNA Cobalt 4209. This constitutes the most accessible full OTA system package on the market.

IEEE Student Design Competition 5

One of several student competitions organized by IEEE society this year asks students to compete for the best 3D-printed mmWave Dual Band Antenna Design. MilliBox provides the portable anechoic 6ft chamber MBX03 and the GIM05-340 3D Spherical Roll 3-axis positioner, for the gain measurement of the contender’s designs, the key metric in this competition.

“We launched MilliBox at IMS in Philadelphia six years ago and since then, the demand for our products has risen continuously. We are pleased to see that this market ubiquity is reflected in this year’s iteration of the IMS exhibition. As MilliBox is becoming a staple feature in many mmWave labs around the world, more partners and customers are happy to show their enthusiasm for our product portfolio,” declared Dr Chinh H Doan founder and CEO of Milliwave Silicon Solutions Inc, the company behind MilliBox Product Line.
